Ethiopia dispatches aid to 250,000 people in Tigray – etbaba.com

The Government of Ethiopia with the assistance of UN humanitarian agencies has distributed food and non-food items to some 250,000 people in Tigray region, government official said.

By deploying eight coordination teams the National Disaster Commission of Ethiopia has dispatched food and non-food assistance to 250,000 people in Tigray region, according to Mitiku Kassa, Commissioner of National Disaster Risk Management Commission, which is in charge of coordinating and leading emergency responses in Ethiopia.

The Commissioner made the remark this afternoon buffing journalists on the ongoing humanitarian assistance to people in Tigray region located in the northern part of the country. “…We are able to coordinate all efforts to deliver food and non-food items to the needy ones.…Currently we are able to dispatch non-food and food items to deliver to more than 250,000 people in the region. Most of the commodities have reached major sites in the region. We deployed around eight coordination team…to coordinate and facilitate the delivery of food and non-food items to the needy ones,” he said,

“Our effort will continue and we are working with international partners,” Commissioner Mitiku said, indicating that his commission has vast experience in managing similar after conflict displacements and humanitarian assistances.

Tens of thousands of people are reportedly need humanitarian assistance in Tigray region of Ethiopia following the recent rule of law operation by the national defense force against the armed group of Tigray peoples Liberation Front (TPLF).

The TPLF later admitted instigating a military confrontation with federal government on November 4, 2020 by launching an attack on the northern military command of the defense force of Ethiopia found in Tigray region.

After three weeks of a military operation assisted by air force and drone technology, the national defense force of Ethiopia has announced completing its military operation liberating almost all of the towns and cities in Tigray including the capital, Mekele City. Currently the specialized federal police team is searching for the fugitive leaders of TPLF including some 167 affiliated with the group and whose arrest warrant is issued by the federal attorney general office.

In addition to those who need humanitarian assistance in Tigray region, the clashes between the federal government and the TPLF has also led over 40,000 people to migrate to the neighboring Sudan, according to media reports.
